The History of Hot Diggity Dog

In the early 60’s, Nick Mastos started one of the first air conditioning businesses in Sarasota. He bought a strip of land along Swift Road to build his office and several rental units. In 1970 Nick and his wife Sally opened the Hot Diggity Dog restaurant in the end unit. It had a pass through window and an outdoor eating area with picnic tables where the present dining room is today.

They fashioned their chili sauce after their favorite home town hot dog place called ‘Texas Hots’ in Altoona, PA. Relatives flew Texas Hots chili sauce down to Sarasota where Sally perfected the recipe… and the Hot Diggity Dog was born – Greek Coney Island style – with chili, mustard and onions.

Robert started working nights in 1983 at Hot Diggity Dog as a teenager while enrolled in college. Sally took over day-to-day operations in 1986, putting Hot Diggity Dog on the map with customers from all over the world. David joined the team in 1992 after moving back to Sarasota from NYC. Over the years the menu has grown to what it is today using only the finest and freshest LOCAL products available.
